Greek audience Essay Example for Free
Greek crowd Essay The psyches of current theater goers are fairly languid contrasted with their Greek partners, many years prior. Today we go to a play and, best case scenario sulk and follow the story, we stay quiet all through and perhaps the most expository and disparaging of us will have a few contemplations on the screenplay. The Greeks anyway had a compatibility with the play, they observed each move, and got behind each line particularly in catastrophe. The reasons why this happened are as per the following: Modern plays fall into the classification of dream dramatizations. The Audience are imperceptible observers of others lives. The characters are made to look and act persuading, so a ruler will be dressed lavishly, a young lady will really be little young lady, and a cattle rustler will brandish a Stetson and colt 45. The crowd have everything compensated for them thus they think that its simple to fall into the hallucination and simply watch. Greek Theater is regular show, the characters are frequently not in outfit and images only demonstrate who was who in the play. For instance a ruler may wear a straightforward crown on his head. In Greek show all the on-screen characters wore covers. Every one of these elements made it exceptionally requesting on a Greek crowd to follow the play before them. Basically they are compelled to observe cautiously and a compatibility is created between the crowd and the play. This crowd got vocal during an exhibition, which is all piece of the affinity. Today we go to a theater and perhaps watch a play, which we have never observed, Greek plays were all notable stories, and the topics and issues were notable to the crowd. The absence of an unexpected component implies the crowd watches the play with a basic eye perceiving how well the play was done, and furthermore whether writer has embedded a good or policy driven issue. This is shown in The Aeneid, Virgil makes Aeneas a progenitor to the Roman race. Iulus who was his relative was straightforwardly connected to Julius Caesar the despot of the time. By doing this he legitimizes the historical backdrop of the people groups past, and they view the story in another light. The Aeneid would be politically fascinating to the normal Greek because of the Carthaginian wars. Indeed, even the notice of Carthage would have alarmed the crowd and they would be satisfied to see that the city was raised to the ground The issue of ethical quality, as I said is regularly investigated, and embodied in a character, Was Oedipus shameless? The Greek crowd would need to consider every option over this disastrous inquiry. From one viewpoint he wasnt in light of the fact that he didnt comprehend what he was doing, however yet he was reviled and pulverized like an indecent individual. This is the place the deplorable component lies, the crowd would feel for him and ask that they themselves dont endure a comparative destiny. Then again he was reprobate, which was profoundly corrupt in Greek occasions, and this is an issue I will cover later in my paper. Greek auditorium anyway is brimming with tense and astounding minutes. During Oedipus the ruler, Jocasta knew that Oedipus was going to discover his destiny. The scenes here were tense. The crowd would get behind it and voice their energy. The best playwrights when they put on the performance will remember sensational incongruity for the play. The entire Oedipus the lord is based around this. The crowd mindful of his destiny watch him wriggle to his fate, since they know and can't stop it happening makes it significantly progressively appalling. At the point when Tiresias the prophet enters, Virgil makes numerous references to visual impairment and disarray, all reflect Oedipus state, as he doesnt know reality, however is exceptionally unexpected in light of the fact that the visually impaired minister is the just a single mindful of the unavoidable peril. As I have delineated the exact opposite thing a Greek crowd will do is to sit quietly through the play. They would mumble to one another, pant, here and there even cheer at the activity unfurling before them. The entire experience would be something beyond an outing; it is progressively an ethical exercise, and a spot brimming with high feeling suggestive of a cutting edge church. The Greek crowd would be strict individuals; the entire auditorium experience was infact a demonstration of love, and it was respected the privilege and obligation of each resident to join in. In the venue a sculpture of Dionysus was available adding to the strict connotation. Having sets up the strict significance of the theater; it is reasonable how the crowd have issues of ethical quality and regard to the Gods on their brains. At the point when Oedipus is offensive, this is considered profoundly shameless as he had full power over his activities dissimilar to his different activities. Everybody was relied upon to go to the theater, and even the individuals who couldnt manage the cost of it were paid for by the state. One can just envision yet the environment was loaded with individuals from varying backgrounds. It is said there were around 14000 individuals in the oval molded field sat all round, this is practically similar to an advanced football coordinate. The immense social significance of the performance center can be seen and comprehended from this, individuals went there to impart thoughts to companions, see companions, and meet individuals. I can envision that as a result of every one of these elements and assortment of individuals, the auditor ium was an extremely intriguing spot. Individuals would clearly have various thought processes in going however it is set up that it was something other than diversion.

How to Design and Execute a Backlinking Strategy that Works
How to Design and Execute a Backlinking Strategy that Works SEO professionals have many strategies available to them to increase the visibility of their websites/pages in search, including content and inbound marketing, proper use of meta data, and backlinking strategy. The latter is one of the more prevalent methods of building search engine visibility, but it is often misunderstood and/or misapplied. Backlinking is key to white hat, gray hat, and black hat strategies, and indeed, speaks to the heart of how search engines index and evaluate websites. No matter what set of strategies an SEO professional eventually settles on, nor whether they are handling SEO in-house or outsourcing it, it is important to understand what backlinking is and how can it affect SERP and other measures of SEO success. © Shutterstock.com | Rawpixel.comIn this article, we will cover 1) what backlinking is and how it affects SEO; 2) inorganic vs. organic backlinking; 3) designing a backlinking strategy that works; and 4) notes on executing your backlinking strategy.WHAT IS BACKLINKING AND HOW DOES IT AFFECT SEO?Backlinking is the process of obtaining links to oneâs website in order to improve overall search visibility. Moz, a leading software firm identifies three types of backlinks:Natural Links: Others give these links to websites without any action taken by the websiteâs owners. For example, a newspaper reports on a corporation and includes a link in on their website to the corporationâs website.Outreach Links: Outreach links are those that SEO practitioners try to obtain through direct action. These are the basis of many backlinking strategies.Self-Created Links: These are links that SEO practitioners can place on third-party websites for SEO purposes.Fundamentally, search engines use prog rams called spiders or crawlers, which travel from link to link online, indexing and evaluating what they find. Using proprietary ranking algorithms, these programs assess the popularity and relevance of websites and webpages on a continuous basis.Early on in search history, crawler algorithms assumed that the more linking to a particular website, the more popular that website must be. This led to SEO practitioners employing a variety of tactics to garner a large number of links to their webpage. In many cases, these links were low quality â" stemming from irrelevant sites. In some cases, SEO practitioners created new websites designed for no other purpose than to provide links to the websites the SEO practitioners were trying to promote. The major search engines grew wise to this and incorporated an emphasis on the quality of links, as well as natural links (see below). Today the exact degree to which the quality and quantity of backlinks affects SERP is unknown. However, search en gines have publicly stated that backlinks do matter quite a bit. When assessing backlink quality, search engines consider:RelevanceThis refers to how often the site itself earns (or SEO practitioners obtain for it) new backlinks, as well as the variety and quality of the sites from which the backlinks stem. More value is assigned to the rate of natural backlinks obtained than outreach or self-created backlinks.Trust rankOne aspect of search engine algorithms is the capacity to âtrustâ certain domains with histories of not harboring spam. How a website domain ranks as far as a search engineâs trust system is an important part of link quality assessment.Anchor textAnchor text refers to text that a URL displays other than its web address. These internal links can heighten the visibility of particular webpages and even websites.Link neighborhoodSearch engines assess not just the domains linking to a site but where those domains themselves link to. In this way, they can better asses s the quality of the backlink, and in turn make a determination about the quality of the site.Local/topic-specific link popularityAlong with link neighborhood, crawlers assess how popular a link is within its âneighborhoodâ of links related by topic, and by common location. SEO practitioners can optimize branded keywords in links and push sharable link-enriched content to increase their popularity.Overall link popularityFundamentally, websites that are more popular are always going to enjoy more natural links than those that do not. Once search engines weed out spam links and unnatural links, they do assess the quantity of backlinks a website has.Social distributionCrawlers also assess the distribution of links shared on social networks. These links are not treated the same as backlinks for ranking purposes by the major search engines, as it is simply too easy to generate them. However, search engines do pay attention to how widely branded keywords, content and links are shared on these networks.INORGANIC VS. ORGANIC BACKLINKINGAll backlinks a firm tries to obtain should be diverse, authoritative, and relevant. Firms and websites may develop organic backlinks through the course of natural operations, such as publishing content or PR activities. These are known as organic backlinks (what Moz refers to as natural backlinks).Firms may also obtain backlinks from link exchanges and purchases, from a variety of sites that are not necessarily a fit for your content/website. These are known as inorganic backlinks. These can be either outreach or self-created links. These typically have less value than organic backlinks in search assessments of website popularity and relevance.Search engines occasionally modify their algorithms to penalize those websites with high numbers of inorganic backlinks. For example, in 2011, Google released Google Panda â" an update to its search algorithm designed specifically to diminish the search visibility of low-content, low-quality websites. Many sites designed solely for SEO purposes, such as link directories, suffered a steep decline in their search rankings. Others that used a number of black hat strategies, such as duplicate content, saw similar declines.Obtaining organic backlinks takes time, but the results of this strategy are sustainable over time. Websites with large quantities of organic backlinks are largely immunized from updates like Panda.DESIGNING A BACKLINKING STRATEGY THAT WORKSThe basis of a good backlinking strategy is a good content marketing strategy. SEO practitioners should strive to produce content that others share and distribute, as well as to which they create backlinks. This white hat strategy, known as content marketing, is the best way to create backlinks over time. A highly effective subset of content marketing â" inbound marketing â" involves the development of content that drives traffic back to the website through backlinks. While inbound marketing is used more directly for increasing traffic than increasing a websiteâs position in search engine results, search engines do also evaluate overall traffic in website SEO assessments. Moreover, increased traffic can increase the likelihood of a website obtaining natural backlinks from users. To design and execute a strong content marketing strategy, SEO practitioners should involve marketers and copywriters to create a steady stream of compelling and current content aligned with both the firmâs brand standards and SEO goals. These content developer should create a content roadmap, a document that outlines what, when, and how content is to be created. Content should be developed that can generate enough interest to elicit organic backlinks, as well as that incorporates backlinks in the content itself. The marketers and SEO practitioners should consider both the channelâs marketing ROI and SEO ROI, and schedule content distribution to not only achieve marketing goals but also SEO trends as well.Public re lations (PR) can greatly enhance SEO efforts. PR involves increasing the public profile of a firm in both offline and online media channels. PR professionals are looking to get the firmâs product mentioned in The New York Times and other major news outlets, industry publications, major blogs, and everywhere else that is feasible. SEO practitioners should incorporate their organizationâs PR departments into SEO efforts, because PR practitioners can become a great source of outreach and self-created backlinks. Their efforts can also increase the likelihood of the organization obtaining organic backlinks Great sources of PR-related backlinks include:Help A Reporter Out (HARO)This free service connects reporters in need of quick expert commentary with agency and in-house PR professionals. PR professionals can work to ensure that the reporters provide a relevant backlink to their organizationâs website.Press release syndicationMany press release syndication services, such as PRWeb or PRNewswire, can provide a great source of backlinks (and, of course, PR). Syndication allows the press release to live on a number of websites, providing backlinks from a variety of different domains, without the content creator being penalized for duplicate content.Guest blog postsThis provides a great way to increase a brandâs exposure and build credibility, as well as generate a solid backlink. The higher the visibility of the blog, the better the quality of the backlink.Co-sponsored/branded events/initiativesMicrosites used to promote co-sponsored events and/or initiatives can provide a strong source of backlinks. While these sites themselves may not have the time to develop high search rank on their own, if they are on subdomains of well-established domain names, they (and by extension backlinks stemming from them) may be assessed highly in terms of quality.Social network profilesMany social network profiles proffer nofollow links only, to prevent their abuse for SEO uses. Dofollow backlinks can be obtained from the social media profiles of YouTube, HubPages, WordPress, Blogger, Tumblr, Reddit, and LinkedIn.Online review sitesProduct/service testimonials on third-party consumer reporting sites can provide a good source of quality backlinks (and good PR, assuming a well-reviewed product/service).Link DirectoriesOnce the go-to source for backlinks, link directories â" webpages that aggregate and categorize links for SEO purposes, no longer hold the same SEO boost they once did. These sources of unnatural links however can help only if those are televant link directories.TestimonialsSEO practitioners can send product reviews to firms for use on their websites and include a backlink. Many firms will add the testimonial, complete with backlink, just to show off consumer appreciation of their product.Website feedback sitesWebsites that provide feedback on the design or layout of other websites can be a good, easy source of dofollow links.InfographicsInfog raphics are a very popular source of content, often making up the entirety of blog posts. Consider tapping marketing/research/PR to create infographics on current topics, post them, share them, or offer them to third-parties. Make sure to embed a backlink. These are just some of the ways to incorporate backlinking strategies into a solid content marketing plan. Once a firm has planned and begun to execute its content strategy, they must regularly assess the impact of published and distributed content on overall SEO (using an analytics program like Web Analytics), and course-correct if/where necessary. Just as channels and content were determined by looking at both marketing and SEO goals, adjustments should be made with marketing goals in mind as well.Depending on oneâs SEO goals, practitioners may need to improve website visibility quickly. Black hat and gray hat approaches may ramp up a websiteâs search engine rankings relatively quickly. Many of these techniques incorporate so me aspects of backlinking. For example, SEO practitioners can create what are known as link pyramids â" which are websites solely designed to provide backlinks to other sites. Hidden links â" backlinks that are invisible to humans, can be placed on link pyramids, and doorway pages â" pages solely designed to redirect visitors to other pages, as well as in widgets. For practitioners with a sizable budget, buying competitor websites to either delete them or provide a source of backlinks, may be an option. Nevertheless, practitioners may suffer significant decreases in ranking, and even be delisted, for excessive use of these techniques.NOTES ON EXECUTING YOUR BACKLINKING STRATEGYWhether one chooses white hat, gray hat, or black hat SEO strategies, SEO practitioners should consider a few fundamental things when designing and executing a backlinking strategy.Properly oversee SEO vendorsWhen obtaining the services of a third-party firm to design and execute SEO strategies, a firm shou ld have a clear idea of how the firm will execute the plan. The firm, not the vendor will suffer any punitive measures proffered by search engines (not to mention potentially be liable for damages, should the firm implement illegal black hat tactics). Understand that firms guaranteeing high organic rankings are likely either overselling themselves or do not understand SEO.Consistently add backlinks over timeSudden spikes in backlinks signal to search engines that a websiteâs owners purchased backlinks. This may lead to the purchasing organizationâs website being penalized.Optimize anchor tags with keyword rich contentThese internal links can have a significant SEO impact on internal webpages. However, donât overdo this. Doing though, even inadvertently, will be read by most search engines as black hat SEO, and may net penalties.Obtain backlinks from a variety of relevant sourcesIf all backlinks stem from one or two sources, search engines assume that the website in question is not relevant.Donât forget socialMany SEO practitioners only think of backlinking strategies as relates to the major search engines. Social networks have their own search engines, some of them quite robust. YouTubeâs search engine, for example, is more heavily searched than Yahoo. Backlinking on social networks that offer no follow links should be assessed in terms of potential for growing and increasing traffic both to branded social channels and to the corporate website, which itself is assessed by search engines for SEO purposes. Backlinks should also be added wherever possible on socially sharable content.Thereâs more to SEOBacklinking is just one of many strategies, and should be used just as judiciously as the others.

Argumentative Essay on Firearm Control in the U.S.
Firearm Control in U.S. The mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School increased my interest on the essence of controlling firearm. I strongly believe that everyone is entitled to a safe environment and as such freedom of life in general. Currently, gun-related deaths have become rampant in the United States. There are various positive arguments that support the use of gun in certain circumstances. For instance, victims of rape, assault, and robberies are less likely to suffer in case they arm themselves with guns. Nevertheless, increased gun related mortality and injury has led to the establishment of firearm control policies(Wuest). Among the western countries, the U.S gun control laws are the most lenient. This infringes on citizenââ¬â¢s rights to life and liberty when people in possession of guns engage in gun violence. Approximately one hundred thousand shootings occur in the U.S. annually( Carter). This creates despair among families and friends whose relatives die or suffer serious injuries. Further, careless gun shootings have led to a drastic decline in life expectancy in the U.S(Wuest). In addition, personal firearm ownership has increased gun suicide and domestic violence. Therefore, there is a significant need to control loss of life through gun shooting and suicide. The right to own a gun and use it for self-protection has been considered American culture for a long period. Nonetheless, I believe that the government should reconsider the right and put certain restrictions such as age limit. Further, people who make bad use of guns should be punished. This will not only reduce gun related deaths, but will also eliminate the instances of domestic violence. In addition, firearm ownership should be controlled in order to protect innocent people who lose their lives from gun related incidents. Works Cited Carter, Gregg Lee. Gun Control in the United States. Revised. Santa Barbara: ABC-CLIO, 2008. Wuest, Michael E. The Great American Gun Control Debate. Illustrated. Bloomington: AuthorHouse, 2010.

The Bystander Effect Of An Emergency Situation - 882 Words
The bystander effect is when an individual will be discouraged from intervening in an emergency situation due to the presence of others. There are many reasons why we help people in emergency situations and these reasons include evolution, modelling and social norms. We also consider the rewards and exchange. Evolution shows that we are biologically predisposed to help others. We have a preference for helping blood relatives because this increases the chance for the helperââ¬â¢s gene to pass on to successive generations. However, there is no empirical evidence to prove this. Evolution also doesnââ¬â¢t explain why people help in some circumstances but fail to help in others. Modelling shows that we learn through observing other peoples behaviour and this was demonstrated in Banduras Social Learning Theory. In this experiment Bandura placed children in rooms with a model. In one condition the model would just play with toys and in the other condition the model would attack a bobo doll. When the children were left alone in the rooms the results showed that they would imitate behaviours they had previously seen displayed by the model (aggressive/non aggressive.) This shows that we can learn new behaviours by observing models. Another study conducted by Rushton and Campbell (1977) showed a confederate engaging with a participant in a friendly social interaction. They were then left in the lab together and passed people asking for blood donations. When the confederate was askedShow MoreRelatedBystander Effect : A Social And Psychological Phenomenon1655 Words à |à 7 PagesThe bystander effect is both a social and psychological phenomenon in which an individ ualââ¬â¢s inclination towards showing helping behaviours are minimised by the influence of other people. Working Individually or in groups, Identify the factors for a successful Incentive plan. For an Incentive plan to succeed, employees must have some desire for the plan. This desire can be influenced in part by how successful management is in introducing plan and convincing employees of its benefits. We will write a custom essay sample on Personeel Management chapter or any similar topic only for you Order Now Encouraging employees to participate In developing and administering the plan is likely to increase their willingness accept It. Compensation specialists also note the following as heartsickness of a successful incentive plan: Financial incentives are linked to valued behavior, the incentive program seems fair to employees, productivity/quality standards are challenging but achievable, and payout formulas are simple and understandable. 2; Contrast the differences between straight piecework, differential piece rate, and standard hour plans. Explain where each plan might best be used. Straight Piecework: One of the oldest incentive plans is based on piecework. Under straight piecework, employees receive a certain rate for each unit produced. Their insemination is determined by the number of units they produce during a pay period. At Staircase, an office furniture maker, employees can earn more than their base pay, often as much as 35 percent more, through piecework for each slab of metal they cut or chair they upholster. Under a differential piece rate, employees whose production exceeds the standard output receive a higher rate for all of their work than the rate paid to those who do not exceed the standard. Computing price rate: Although time standards establish the time required to perform a given amount f work, they do not by themselves determine what the incentive rate should be. The incentive rates must be based on hourly wage rates that would otherwise be paid for the type of work being performed. (standard time per unit) (Hourly rate) (units per hour) (Minutes per hour) = units per hour = per unit Standard hour plan: Another common incentive technique is the standard hour plan, which sets incentive rates on the basis of a predetermined ââ¬Å"standard timeâ⬠for completing a Job. If employees finish the work In less than the expected time, their pay Is still based on the standard time for the Job multiplied by their hourly rate. For example, if the standard time to install an engine in a half-ton truck is five hours and 1 OFF mechanicââ¬â¢s hourly rate times five hours. Standard hour plans are particularly suited to long-cycle operations or Jobs or tasks that are non-repetitive and require a variety of skills. 3; A frequently heard complaint about merit raises is that they do little to increase employee effort. What are the causes of this belief? Suggest ways in which the motivating value of merit raises may be increased. No easy solutions to these problems, organizations using a true merit pay plan often base the percentage pay ease on merit guidelines tied to performance appraisals. For example, Highlights in HARM 3 illustrates a guideline chart for awarding merit raises. The percentages may change each year, depending on various internal or external concerns such as profit levels or national economic conditions as indicated by changes in the consumer price index. Under the illustrated merit plan, to prevent all employees from being rated outstanding or above average, managers may be required to distribute the performance rating according to some pre-established formula (such as only 10 percent can be rated outstanding). Additionally, when setting merit percentage guidelines, organizations should consider individual performance along with such factors as training, experience, and current earnings. 4; what are the reasons behind the different payment methods for sales employees? The reason behind different payment methods for sales employees is that not every company shares exactly the same standards of measuring sales performance. From my point of view, the best method would be the combined salary and commission plan and it will be also the most useful. As its name says, it is made by two different plans, combined salary and omission plan, this obviously represents an advantage. It also offers some flexibility, allowing to the employees to receive bonuses and commission to certain sales periods. With this extra compensation, employees will keep their work up in order to get bonuses and incentives. ; Because of competitive forces within your industry, you have decided to implement a profit-sharing plan for your employees. Discuss the advantages of profit sharing and identify specific characteristics that will assure success for your plan. Profit-sharing plans differ in the proportion of profits shared with employees and in the distribution and form of paymen t. The amount shared with employees may range from 5 to 50 percent of the net profit. In most plans, however, about 20 to 25 percent of the net profit is shared. Profit distributions may be made to all employees on an equal basis, or they may be based on regular salaries or some formula that takes into account seniority and/or merit. The payments may be disbursed in cash, deferred, or made on the basis of combining the two forms of payments. 7; what are some of the reasons for the rapid growth of Seeps? Cite some of the potential problems concerning their use. The first advantage is that Seeps increase inconsiderable tax benefits and tax incentives; it also helps a lot in the retirement benefits for the workers avoiding taxation cuts. Shakespeare and the Critics
Shakespeare and the Critics Free Online Research Papers Shakespeare is possibly the greatest play writer of our time. One of his more famous plays ââ¬Å"Hamletâ⬠tells the story of a man, Hamlet, who is misunderstood by everyone. It is very easy for one to project his or her own faults onto someone else, and this is exactly what happens in the play. Hamlet does many strange things and each thing is blamed on a different reason. This is similar to when a critic analysis a piece of work. They tend to compare the play to something they have gone through in their life. T.S. Elliotââ¬â¢s essay ââ¬Å"Hamlet and His Problemsâ⬠is a perfect example that critics are narrow minded. They only see things in the way they want and they do not have an open mind about anything. Hamlet seems mad and acts very strange in some cases this causes the main debate that critics talk about; KING: How is it that clouds still hang on you? Hamlet: Not so, my lord. I am too much in the sun.â⬠Even though Hamlet is only saying he is mad to fool the king, many people think that he has really gone mad out of frustration for the tragedy that occurred. Hamlet also seems to be a liar by blaming his appearance on coincidence rather than the tragedy that took place. The first argument is a more recent argument and T.S. Elliotââ¬â¢s quotes Professor Stoll of the University of Minnesota saying that: Critics of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries knew less about psychology than more recent Hamlet critics, but they were nearer in spirit to Shakespeares art; and as they insisted on the importance of the effect of the whole rather than on the importance of the leading character, they were nearer, in their old-fashioned way, to the secret of dramatic art in general.â⬠The modern critics all think he has gone mad. Clearly they never experienced a tragedy themselves; otherwise they would know what the experience could do to someone. When he throws off the kingââ¬â¢s question he is not doing it because he doesnââ¬â¢t want to talk to the king he is doing it because he canââ¬â¢t handle all the questions. This is perfectly normal. Critics who have never been a situation like this are unable to think outside the box, and understand what someone else is going through. Other critics misunderstand Hamlets behavior by saying he is a homosexual. This is a misunderstanding of the fact that Hamlet canââ¬â¢t trust any man. Therefore, he advises Ophelia to trust no man. The only man she can trust is Jesus. The only way a critic can see the real issues here would be if they went through the same thing that Hamlet did. If a woman went through a terrible divorce and then tells her friends not to trust any man, does this make her gay? No, this just means that she went through a trauma that no one can understand unless they went through the same thing. The difference between a good critic and a bad critic is one that understands his own boundaries. If a critic can realize that he is not always able to understand what the character is going through and that he must think outside of the box in order to understand it, he will be a good critic. I agree with Elliotââ¬â¢s critic on the critics of Hamlet he understands like I do that you cannot judge a situation until you were put in it yourself. Definition and Discussion of Classical Rhetoric
Definition and Discussion of Classical Rhetoric Definition The expression classical rhetoric refers to theà practice and teaching of rhetoric in ancient Greece and Rome from roughly the fifth century B.C. to the early Middle Ages. Though rhetorical studies began in Greece in the fifth century B.C., the practice of rhetoric began much earlier with the emergence of Homo sapiens. Rhetoric became a subject of academic study at a time when ancient Greece was evolving from an oral culture to a literate one. See the observations below. Periods of Western Rhetoric Classical RhetoricMedieval RhetoricRenaissance RhetoricEnlightenment RhetoricNineteenth-Century RhetoricNew Rhetoric(s) Observations [T]he earliest surviving use of the term rhetorike is in Platos Gorgias in the early fourth century BCE. . . . [I]t is likely, although impossible to prove definitively, that Plato himself coined the term.(David M. Timmerman and Edward Schiappa, Classical Greek Rhetorical Theory and the Disciplining of Discourse. Cambridge University Press, 2010) Rhetoric in Ancient GreeceClassical writers regarded rhetoric as having been invented, or more accurately, discovered, in the fifth century B.C. in the democracies of Syracuse and Athens. . . . [T]hen, for the first time in Europe, attempts were made to describe the features of an effective speech and to teach someone how to plan and deliver one. Under democracies citizens were expected to participate in political debate, and they were expected to speak on their own behalf in courts of law. A theory of public speaking evolved, which developed an extensive technical vocabulary to describe features of argument, arrangement, style, and delivery . . . .Classical rhetoriciansthat is, teachers of rhetoricrecognized that many features of their subject could be found in Greek literature before the invention of rhetoric . . .. Conversely, the teaching of rhetoric in the schools, ostensibly concerned primarily with training in public address, had a significant effect on written composition, and thus on literature.(George Kennedy, A New History of Classical Rhetoric. Princeton University Press, 1994) Roman RhetoricEarly Rome was a republic rather than a direct democracy, but it was a society in which public speaking was as important to civic life as it had been in Athens . . ..The ruling elite [in Rome] viewed rhetoric with suspicion, leading the Roman Senate to ban the teaching of rhetoric and close all the schools in 161 BC. Although this move was partially motivated by strong anti-Greek sentiments among the Romans, it is clear that the Senate also was motivated by a desire to eliminate a powerful tool for social change. In the hands of demagogues like the Gracchi, rhetoric had the potential to stir the restless poor, inciting them to riots as part of the endless internal conflicts among the ruling elite. In the hands of skillful legal orators like Lucius Licinius Crassus and Cicero, it had the power to undermine Romes traditionally rigid interpretation and application of law.(James D. Williams, An Introduction to Classical Rhetoric: Essential Readings. Wiley, 2009) Rhetoric a nd WritingFrom its origin in 5th century BC Greece through its flourishing period in Rome and its reign in the medieval trivium, rhetoric was associated primarily with the art of oratory. During the Middle Ages, the precepts of classical rhetoric began to be applied to letter-writing, but it was not until the Renaissance . . . that the precepts governing the spoken art began to be applied, on any large scale, to written discourse.(Edward Corbett and Robert Connors, Classical Rhetoric for the Modern Student. Oxford University Press, 1999) Women in Classical RhetoricThough most historical texts focus on the father figures of classical rhetoric, women (though generally excluded from educational opportunities and political offices) also contributed to the rhetorical tradition in ancient Greece and Rome. Women such as Aspasia and Theodote have sometimes been described as the muted rhetoricians; unfortunately, because they left no texts, we know few details about their contributions. To learn more about the roles played by women in classical rhetoric, see Rhetoric Retold: Regendering the Tradition from Antiquity Through the Renaissance, by Cheryl Glenn (1997); Rhetorical Theory by Women Before 1900, edited by Jane Donawerth (2002); and Jan Swearingens Rhetoric and Irony: Western Literacy and Western Lies (1991). Primary Rhetoric, Secondary Rhetoric, and LetteraturizzazionePrimary rhetoric involves utterance on a specific occasion; it is an act not a text, though subsequently it can be treated as a text. The primacy of pri mary rhetoric is a fundamental fact in the classical tradition: through the time of the Roman Empire teachers of rhetoric, whatever was the real situation of their students, took as their nominal goal the training of persuasive public speakers; even in the early Middle Ages, when there was reduced practical opportunity to exercise civic rhetoric, the definition and content of rhetorical theory as set forth by Isidore and Alcuin, for example, show the same civic assumption; the revival of classical rhetoric in Renaissance Italy was foreshadowed by renewed need for civic rhetoric in the cities of the 12th and 13th centuries; and the great period of neoclassical rhetoric was the time when public speaking emerged as a major force in church and state in France, England, and America.Secondary rhetoric, on the other hand, refers to rhetorical techniques as found in discourse, literature and art forms when those techniques are not being used for an oral, persuasive purpose. . . . Frequent m anifestations of secondary rhetoric are commonplaces, figures of speech, and tropes in written works. Much literature, art and informal discourse is decorated by secondary rhetoric, which may be a mannerism of the historical period in which it is composed. . . .It has been a persistent characteristic of classical rhetoric in almost every stage of its history to move from primary to secondary forms, occasionally then reversing the pattern. For this phenomenon the Italian term letteraturizzazione has been coined. Letteraturizzazione is the tendency of rhetoric to shift focus from persuasion to narration, from civic to personal contexts, and from speech to literature, including poetry.(George Kennedy, Classical Rhetoric and Its Christian and Secular Tradition, 2nd ed. Vincent van Goghââ¬â¢s Cafà © Terrace at Night is a piece of painting portraying night hour occurrences. Contrary to common knowledge, the paintings reveals the night as a more alive time than the common day instances. Vincent van Goghââ¬â¢s Cafà © Terrace at Night, indeed reveals a night scene that is lively and well light from the existence of starts in the sky, providing sufficient illumination to light the whole scene. The stars in the sky are to a limited extent consumed by their own light, therefore contributing much light to the scene below. On to its exterior side, Vincent van Goghââ¬â¢s Cafà © Terrace at Night, has been painted with bright colors that additionally assist in the brightening of the scene. Ideally the brightly yellow colored walls draws ones attention to the scene rather than offering assistance to an individual to move eyes around the general painting scenery. A negotiation report was also made on these fourteen points. These fourteen points were also accepted by Italy and France. After the session Britain signed acceptance to all the points except freedom of sea due to the condition of allies. These fourteen points are based on the research of inquiry. This speech included many principles of progressivism which promoted domestic reforms in US and translated then into foreign policy (Mulder, 71). This fourteen point speech is the only statement which aims to focus on wars as compared to any other nation fighting in World War I. Some nations tried to give indicators in relation to their aims, but majority of nations tried to keep their war go als private. This speech also reacted to Vladimir Leninââ¬â¢s Decree on Peace in October 1917; in it Russia made an immediate proposal of withdrawal of war and promotes peace and freedom, which was further compromised by territorial annexations. 1.2 Fourteen points. The first five points of fourteen points focuses on international concerns, while the others refer to territorial questions.â⬠¢Open diplomacy. There should be open peace in the nations, which means there should not be any private international understanding among nations. Summary of James Hiltons Goodbye, Mr. Chips Essay example -- Teachers
Summary of James Hilton's Goodbye, Mr. Chips James Hiltonââ¬â¢s novel Goodbye, Mr. Chips is the story of an English schoolmaster who dedicated his entire adult life teaching young boys. He was a somewhat shy person. Nevertheless he was a competent school teacher, professional and attractive in many different ways. Although his first teaching experience was not successful, he was determined to become a good schoolmaster. After coming to Brookfield, he began to warm up to his students. But more important he brought discipline to his school which is the requirement for good teachingââ¬âsomething he did not achieve while teaching at Melbery. After teaching 25 years at Brookfield, Chips was still unmarried. Everyone thought that he would never get married because he had passed the usual marrying age. But, he did marry and it happened under unusual conditions. He went on a trip to the Lake district of England and there, he met his future wife, Katherine Bridges. During the trip, he was climbing a steep hill when he saw a woman from far waving at someone down below. The woman was standing on a dangerous-looking ledge and appeared to be asking for help. Chips thought that she needed to be rescued and proceeded to help her. Instead of helping her, he hurt his ankle, and in the end, she ended up helping Chips. Within weeks after their first meeting, they fell in love with each other and before the end of summer, they got married. Katherine deeply loved Chips and he loved her in return. Within a short time, the charming Katherine turned Mr. chips into an good-natured gentleman who was adored by his students. He was changed by the power of love. Chips became a kind, congenial, friendly individual to everyoneââ¬âso much so that he became the most beloved teacher at Brookfield. Full of enthusiasm, young English schoolmaster Mr. Chipping came to teach at Brookfield in 1870. It was a time when dignity and a kindness of spirit still existed, and the dedicated new schoolmaster expressed these beliefs to his disorderly students. Nicknamed Mr. Chips, this gentle and caring man helped shape the lives of generation after generation of boys. He became a legend at Brookfield, as continuing as the institution itself. And sad but grateful faces told the story when the time came for the students at Brookfield to bid their final goodbye to Mr. Chips. This novel Goodbye, Mr... ...oolââ¬â¢s war dead; for everyone else they are just names, but for Chips, each name has a face attached. After the War the retireds, after 42 years teaching Roman History and Latin at Brookfield. Mr. Chips is the living personification of institutional memory. The classes of boys, the teachers and headmasters, even the subjects and teaching methods, come and go, but Chips has remained throughout. He ââ¬Å"still had those ideas of dignity and generosity that a frantic world was forgetting.â⬠He embodies the pre-War world and its values. In the very middle of an era that was witnessing an unregulated attack on all of the Westââ¬â¢s institutions and values, Hilton created Mr. Chips, it represent the conservative idealââ¬âproviding a bridge of memory to all that is beautiful and good and decent in our past, just in case, in our zeal to create a perfect world, we forget the qualities and accomplishments which give us the pretty good world in which we live. This book is unabashedly sentimental. I appreciate the sensitivity non-political way in which they make the most important of political points: even as we move forward we must always preserve those things and ideas of value in our past.

Unfortunately, jobs are going to be lost and the unemployment rate may rise due to globalization. However, the benefits of globalization are infinite.
